Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
As Part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Senator Hannon and Winthrop Urology will host two Free Prostate Screenings
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. If caught early, it can be very treatable. Thus, it is extremely important for men to be tested, as early as the age of 40 for those at a high risk. Men whose close relative (father, brother, uncle) have been diagnosed with prostate cancer have an increased risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer.Prostate cancer occurs more often in African-American men than in men of other races. The chance of having prostate cancer increases after age 50.Most studies have found that being obese is linked with a higher overall risk of getting prostate cancer.
Winthrop Urology is hosting both of Senator Hannon's prostate screenings and Winthrop-University Hospital's Perspectives in Health series is offering a free seminar for the community on September 8 at 7 PM. This seminar, titled "Prostate Cancer: Prevention, Treatement, & Research" will include a lot of important information about the disease and is highly recommended. This event is located at Winthrop's Research & Academic Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard, at the corner of Second Street in Mineola. To pre-register, please call 516-663-3916.
