HANNON LEGISLATION WILL MAKE IT EASIER TO OBTAIN SENIOR CITIZENS REAL PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTIONS
The Senate has passed my bill to simplify the process for senior citizens to apply for and receive their senior citizen real property tax exemption. The bill, S.1924, will eliminate the requirement that senior citizens reapply for their senior citizen real property tax exemption (“SCRPTE”) every year. The legislation will still need to be approved by the Assembly and signed into law by the Governor.
Senior citizens are currently required to reapply annually for a SCRPTE, which is both cumbersome and unnecessary. This legislation will place the responsibility for checking income requirements on the taxing authority, instead of making seniors prove their eligibility every year. By relieving seniors of this burden, they can more effectively budget, control and determine their futures.
This bill has been referred to the Assembly.
